COMMUNITY PROGRAMS, TALKS, AND PRESENTATIONS |
 School Resource Officer Program
The Greenville Police Department's Youth Services Program has developed over the years to better address the community’s changing juvenile needs and to offer to the youth of our community the opportunity to succeed. The School Resource Officer (SRO) Program was developed to address juvenile crime and safety concerns in our local schools.
The SRO program places a police officer in the middle and high schools with the goal of creating and maintaining a safe, secure, and orderly learning environment for students, teachers, and staff. The SRO program reflects the community’s desire to ensure that it’s schools are safe and secure. SRO’s represent a proactive strategy designed to bring prevention and intervention into the schools.
A GPD SRO is on campus daily at Hughs Academy, JL Mann High School, League Academy, Greenville High School and Greenville Middle School. The presence of a uniformed police officer provides a deterrent to criminal activity by discouraging unwanted and undesirable visitors on the school grounds or in the surrounding area.
The SRO provides support and training for school staff on issues of juvenile law, substance abuse, and school safety. He investigates crimes committed by juveniles and is involved in planning and executing several enforcement programs throughout the year. The School Resource Officer is a positive role model for many students who are not exposed to such role models in today’s society, and his presence in the school sends a strong message that violence and certain behaviors are not acceptable.

 Community Officer Drug Education Program

C.O.D.E. is a comprehensive drug education and prevention program for students in fifth grade.
The curriculum emphasizes the harmful effects, costs and consequences of tobacco, alcohol and other drug use. The program helps students develop refusal skills and positive alternatives to substance abuse.
Officers are trained by Greenville Family Partnership which provides the teaching materials and which also hosts the annual anti-drug Red Ribbon Week for kids from Greenville Schools.
The C.O.D.E. program is different from other drug prevention programs offered in schools. It is designed to be delivered by Law Enforcement Officers so that students can better understand their police officer as a resource for information and as a friendly, engaging, and caring person in the classroom as well as an enforcer of the law in their neighborhoods.
Also, the students develop a better understanding of legal and illegal drugs and their effects on families and the community.
Subjects include:
- Alcohol
- Bullying
- Inhalants
- Marijuana
- Other Drugs
- Peer Pressure
- Personal Safety
- Resistance Skills

 CitizenCare Program

What is the CitizenCare Program?
The CitizenCare program is a free service offered to those persons who need periodic contact to ensure their safety and security. The contact can be made daily or just on week-days, depending on the needs of the citizen.
Citizens who are eligible for this program include; persons with life impairing diabilities, persons without local contacts to check on their welfare, and home-bound individuals.
How does the Citizencare Program work?
Each day between 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. the computer places an automated telephone call to check on the status of those citizens who are registered with the program. If the citizen needs no assistance, they should press the number 6 on their telephone and hang up. If they require assistance, they should press the number 9 on their telephone to request an Officer to respond to their location.
If there is no answer or the citizen hangs up without pressing a number, the system will notify the the GPD Communications Bureau who will dispatch an Officer to the citizen's home to check on the citizen.
Citizens who will not be home during the time scheduled for the automated call must call the Communications Bureau (in advance if possible), to let the Bureau know they are okay so an Offficer will not be sent to check on them.
For more information, or to sign up, please call the Communications Bureau at (864) 271-5333.
